2027 BMW i3: 468-Mile Estimated Range, 463 HP, Price, Charging & U.S. Release

The 2027 BMW i3 brings one of BMW's most important nameplates into a completely new era. This is not a successor in concept to the compact i3 hatchback sold previously. Instead, the new i3 is the first fully electric BMW 3 Series sedan, built around BMW's Neue Klasse technology.

For the U.S., the launch model is the BMW i3 50 xDrive. It combines dual-motor all-wheel drive, 463 horsepower, an estimated maximum range of up to 468 miles and DC fast charging at up to 400 kW.

BMW has priced the i3 50 xDrive from $61,500, plus a $1,350 destination and handling charge. U.S. sales are scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027.

What Is the New BMW i3?

The new i3 represents a major change in BMW's electric-car strategy. Instead of creating a separate experimental EV family, BMW is integrating electric propulsion directly into one of its most recognizable product lines.

The eighth-generation 3 Series will therefore be offered with both electric and gasoline powertrains. The electric i3 uses BMW's Neue Klasse architecture, while gasoline versions continue with internal-combustion engines and 48-volt mild-hybrid technology.

For shoppers, that makes the i3 essentially the electric counterpart to the traditional BMW 3 Series sedan.

BMW i3 50 xDrive Performance

The i3 50 xDrive uses one electric motor at each axle, providing all-wheel drive.

Combined output is 463 hp with 476 lb-ft of torque. BMW says the sedan can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds.

BMW uses two different motor technologies in the drivetrain. An electrically excited synchronous motor is fitted at the rear, while an asynchronous motor assists at the front.

The approach is designed to balance performance, traction and efficiency rather than relying on both motors at maximum output continuously.

Key point: the i3's biggest story is not simply horsepower. BMW is combining sports-sedan performance with unusually long estimated range and very high peak charging power.

446–468 Miles of Estimated Range

BMW currently estimates that the i3 50 xDrive will deliver between 446 and 468 miles of maximum driving range, depending on configuration.

Important: this is not yet a final EPA-certified range figure. BMW says the estimate comes from preliminary BMW testing using EPA test procedures. Final certification may produce a different number.

That distinction matters because wheel size, tires, equipment, temperature, speed and driving conditions can all affect real-world EV range.

If the production car ultimately receives an EPA rating close to BMW's current estimate, range could become one of the i3's biggest competitive strengths.

Gen6 Cylindrical-Cell Battery

The i3 uses BMW's sixth-generation electric-drive and battery technology.

Its new cylindrical lithium-ion cells measure 46 mm in diameter and 95 mm in height. BMW says they provide approximately 20% greater volumetric energy density than the prismatic cells used in its previous Gen5 battery systems.

BMW also uses a cell-to-pack construction method. Instead of grouping cells into conventional intermediate modules, the cells are integrated more directly into the high-voltage battery pack.

The goal is to improve energy density at the pack level while reducing unnecessary structural weight and cost.

BMW's U.S. launch material does not specify a final usable battery-capacity figure for the i3 50 xDrive, so DriveSpecLab is not estimating one.

400-kW DC Fast Charging

The i3 uses an 800-volt electrical architecture and supports DC fast charging at up to 400 kW.

BMW says the i3 50 xDrive can add approximately 191 to 208 miles of estimated range in 10 minutes when connected to a suitable high-power charger under favorable conditions.

Peak charging power should not be interpreted as the rate the car will maintain throughout an entire charging session. Actual charging speed will depend on battery temperature, starting state of charge, charger capability and the vehicle's charging curve.

400-Volt DC Chargers Are Also Supported

The Gen6 system includes an integrated switching matrix that also allows the i3 to use 400-volt DC charging infrastructure.

That improves compatibility with existing chargers instead of limiting owners to newer 800-volt equipment.

Up to 15.4-kW AC Charging

For home or destination charging, BMW says the new i3 supports AC charging at up to 15.4 kW.

BMW's Wallbox Plus can provide up to 64 amps and supports the NACS connector, although actual home charging capability will depend on the property's electrical installation.

Bidirectional Charging: The i3 Can Supply Power

BMW is also introducing bidirectional charging functionality with the new i3.

With compatible equipment, the battery can do more than power the vehicle.

Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) allows electrical devices to draw energy from the vehicle.

Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) is designed to allow the vehicle battery to supply electricity to a home in compatible installations.

BMW says its Multifunction Charger and Vehicle-to-Load adapter can provide a combined external output of up to 3.7 kW.

Charging Route Planning and Plug & Charge

The i3's navigation system can automatically plan charging stops when a destination lies beyond the vehicle's available range.

BMW Maps can consider charging-station availability, charging power, expected charging time, connector type and other information when planning a route.

The battery can also be preconditioned before a fast-charging stop to help it reach a more suitable temperature for high charging speeds.

Compatible stations can use Plug & Charge, allowing authentication to happen automatically after the charging cable is connected.

BMW Panoramic iDrive Interior

The interior introduces BMW's Panoramic iDrive system, one of the largest interface changes in the modern 3 Series.

It combines BMW Panoramic Vision, a 17.9-inch Central Display, an available 3D Head-Up Display and BMW Operating System X.

Panoramic Vision

BMW Panoramic Vision projects information across the lower section of the windshield, placing important driving information closer to the driver's normal line of sight.

17.9-Inch Central Display

The free-cut central touchscreen is angled toward the driver and uses BMW's QuickSelect interface.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

Operating System X

BMW Operating System X uses an Android Open Source Project-based software architecture and is designed to support continued software updates and digital feature additions.

AI-Based BMW Voice Assistant

BMW is also expanding its Intelligent Personal Assistant with large-language-model technology based on Alexa+.

The aim is to allow more conversational voice interactions instead of forcing drivers to memorize rigid command structures.

Level 2 Highway Assist

Available driver-assistance technology includes attentive hands-free highway driving on suitable limited-access highways at speeds of up to 85 mph.

This remains an SAE Level 2 driver-assistance system. The driver remains responsible for supervising the vehicle and must be prepared to intervene.

BMW i3 M60 xDrive Is Confirmed

BMW has officially confirmed that an i3 M60 xDrive will join the range in 2027.

It will use BMW's Gen6 M eDrive technology and dual electric motors.

BMW has not yet published the complete U.S. price, output, range and performance specification for the M60, so those figures should remain marked as pending until official details are released.

When Will the 2027 BMW i3 Arrive in the U.S.?

BMW says the i3 50 xDrive will launch in the United States in the first quarter of 2027.

The fully electric i3 will be built at BMW Group's Munich plant in Germany.

What Could Make the i3 Important?

The new i3 matters because BMW is no longer treating electric cars as a side branch of its lineup.

The 3 Series has been one of the brand's core products for decades, and the arrival of a Neue Klasse electric version brings BMW's newest EV technology directly into that established segment.

Three specifications stand out most:

  • 446–468 miles of preliminary estimated range
  • Up to 400-kW DC fast charging
  • 463 hp with standard dual-motor AWD

If final EPA testing and real-world charging performance remain close to BMW's preliminary claims, the new i3 could address two of the largest concerns premium-EV buyers still have: highway range and charging time.

DriveSpecLab Take

The 2027 BMW i3 looks more significant than a simple electric addition to the 3 Series lineup.

BMW is pairing familiar sports-sedan positioning with the company's newest battery, charging, software and electrical architecture.

For buyers, the most compelling numbers are not necessarily the 463 horsepower or 4.5-second acceleration time. The combination of potentially more than 440 miles of range and 400-kW peak charging could make the i3 considerably easier to use on long-distance trips than many earlier premium EVs.

The remaining question is how closely the production car's final EPA rating and real-world charging curve match BMW's preliminary figures. Those two results will matter more than headline specifications once customer deliveries begin.
